Both consist principally of carbon arranged in a diamond crystal structure. They possess the hardness, transparency, brilliance and fire associated with diamond and are suitable for fine jewellery, including engagement rings, wedding rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets.
Lab-grown diamonds should not be confused with diamond simulants. Materials such as cubic zirconia and moissanite may resemble diamonds, but they have different chemical and physical properties. A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation: it is a diamond with a laboratory origin.
How are earth-formed diamonds created?
Earth-formed diamonds developed naturally beneath the Earth’s surface under conditions of intense heat and pressure. Their formation took place over extraordinarily long periods, with many diamonds believed to be hundreds of millions or even billions of years old.

Certification and grading reports

The report should also state whether the diamond is lab-grown or earth-formed. Many graded diamonds carry a microscopic inscription on the girdle that corresponds with the report number and, where applicable, identifies their laboratory origin.
A grading report is not the same as a financial valuation. It describes the diamond’s gemmological characteristics but does not guarantee a particular selling price or future value.
What about resale value?
Jewellery should primarily be purchased to wear and enjoy rather than as a guaranteed financial investment. Both lab-grown and earth-formed diamond prices can change, and the amount realised through resale may be considerably below the original retail price.
