Diamond Guide: Earth-Formed and Lab-Created Diamonds

Diamonds have been admired for centuries for their brilliance, durability and ability to mark life’s most important moments. Today, buyers can choose between earth-formed and lab-created diamonds. Their origins are different, but both are genuine diamonds with the same essential chemical composition, crystal structure and optical qualities. Each can be cut into beautiful shapes, graded by recognised laboratories and set into fine jewellery.

Understanding the features that determine a diamond’s appearance and quality is more useful than choosing by origin alone. Cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, shape and certification all deserve consideration, as does the character of the individual stone. This guide explains the qualities shared by all diamonds, how the two origins differ and what to look for when selecting the right diamond for you.

What is a diamond?

A diamond is a crystal made almost entirely from carbon. Its atoms are arranged in an exceptionally strong structure, making diamond the hardest naturally occurring material and particularly suitable for jewellery worn every day. Hardness does not mean that a diamond is indestructible: a sharp impact in the wrong place can still chip it, so sensible care remains important.

The sparkle of a polished diamond comes from its interaction with light. When its facets are cut and proportioned well, light enters the stone, reflects within it and returns to the eye. This creates brightness, flashes of spectral colour known as fire, and the pattern of light and dark called scintillation.

How earth-formed diamonds are created

Earth-formed diamonds developed deep below the Earth’s surface under intense heat and pressure. Most formed over extremely long geological periods before volcanic activity carried them nearer the surface within particular types of rock. They are recovered through mining and then sorted, cut and polished.

Because their growth occurred in nature, earth-formed diamonds may contain tiny internal features or surface characteristics created during formation. These are called inclusions and blemishes. Their type, number, size and position help gemmologists assess clarity and can give each diamond an individual internal fingerprint.

How lab-created diamonds are made

Lab-created diamonds are grown in controlled conditions using technology that recreates the circumstances in which diamond crystal can form. The two principal methods are High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). HPHT uses very high pressure and temperature around a small diamond seed. CVD places a seed in a chamber where carbon-containing gases deposit layers of diamond crystal.

The finished crystal is cut and polished in the same way as an earth-formed diamond. Lab-created diamonds are not diamond simulants: they are diamonds. Simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials with different physical and optical properties. Trained gemmologists use specialist equipment to distinguish lab-created from earth-formed diamonds because appearance alone is not a dependable test.

Understanding the Four Cs

The Four Cs provide a common framework for describing and comparing diamonds of either origin.

Cut

Cut is the factor most directly connected with sparkle. It concerns the proportions, symmetry and polish of a finished diamond rather than simply its outline. A well-cut stone returns light effectively and often appears livelier and brighter. Cut grades are most commonly given to round brilliant diamonds, although the quality of facet arrangement matters in every shape.

Colour

For colourless to near-colourless diamonds, grading usually runs from D, which is colourless, through progressively warmer tones. Differences between neighbouring grades can be subtle, particularly once a diamond is mounted. The metal colour, diamond shape and personal taste can all influence which grade looks most appealing.

Clarity

Clarity describes the presence and visibility of internal inclusions and external blemishes under controlled examination. Grades range from Flawless through several included categories. Many inclusions are microscopic and have little or no effect on the beauty seen without magnification. Position can matter as much as quantity, so two diamonds with the same clarity grade may look different.

Carat weight

Carat measures weight, not physical dimensions: one carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can face up at different sizes because of their shape and proportions. Carat should therefore be considered alongside measurements and cut quality rather than as a measure of beauty or quality by itself.

Diamond shapes and personal style

Shape describes a diamond’s outline. The round brilliant is designed for strong light performance and remains a classic choice. Oval, pear and marquise shapes can create an elongated appearance, while emerald and Asscher cuts use broad, stepped facets for a calmer, mirror-like character. Princess, cushion and radiant cuts offer their own balance of clean lines, softness and sparkle.

No shape is universally best. Finger proportions, setting style and individual taste all play a part. It is also worth remembering that cut quality can vary within every shape, so the appeal of the particular stone matters more than the shape name alone.

Certification and disclosure

An independent grading report records a diamond’s assessed characteristics, typically including its measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity and other identifying details. Depending on the stone and laboratory, it may also include cut, polish, symmetry, fluorescence and a plotted diagram of clarity features. The report should clearly state whether the diamond is earth-formed or lab-created.

A grading report is not a valuation and does not determine whether a diamond is beautiful. It is a useful, standardised description that helps you understand what you are buying and compare apparently similar stones. Always check that the report number matches any inscription and the information supplied with the jewellery.

Choosing between earth-formed and lab-created diamonds

The choice is personal. Some people are drawn to the geological history and natural rarity of an earth-formed diamond. Others value the production method and purchasing possibilities offered by a lab-created diamond. Price, size, grade, availability and feelings about origin may all influence the decision.

Neither origin removes the need to assess quality carefully. Compare the complete stone rather than focusing on a single grade, and prioritise the characteristics you can actually see. A balanced diamond with lively light performance can be more satisfying than one selected solely for an impressive specification on paper.

Caring for every diamond

Diamonds attract oils and can lose some of their apparent brightness through everyday wear. Gentle cleaning with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft brush will usually restore their sparkle. Rinse carefully and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, and have the setting inspected periodically so that claws, bezels and other components remain secure.

Store diamond jewellery separately to prevent it scratching other pieces—or other diamonds. Remove rings for heavy manual work, vigorous exercise and tasks involving knocks or abrasive materials.

Earth-formed and lab-created diamonds share the beauty, strength and optical character that define a diamond. Their different origins give buyers more choice, not a single correct answer.
